Mozart: The Palatine Sonatas for Piano with Violin K.301-306
At the age of 22, Mozart was bemoaning lost love and decided to ‘apply myself conscientiously to the clavier duets’, He finished the full set of six Sonatas for Piano – with Violin – in the summer of 1778 and dedicated to the Countess Elizabeth Auguste, Electress of Palatine and Bavaria. They have become known as the ‘Palatine Sonatas’ and are the earliest (relatively) mature works in this instrumental combination, his first essays in the form being at the age of ten.
As piano sonatas with violin (as opposed to the Violin Sonatas of later musical eras) these pieces have exquisite balance and are in fact wonderful in every sense; a pure joy. They are dazzlingly colourful, full of drama and emotion. The artists were particularly keen to present these works in an authentic ambience, as in an 18th century salon, and the result is a beautiful balance and intimacy.

Reviews
“A particular feature of these period-informed performances, and of the recording, is the changing balance between instruments… there are lively conversations between the players. Bright tone and vivid phrasing… irresistible joie de vivre and fine dovetailing of dynamics between instruments.
” —Tim Homfray
“Sheppard Skærved is an experienced advocate for the works, balanced nicely by Pienaar’s lightness of touch.
” —Charlotte Smith
“Sheppard Skærved offers a full range of expressive and dynamic effects. Pienaar, meanwhile – as befits one who has recorded a ‘thoughtful, profound’ set of the complete piano sonatas (an Editor’s Choice) –approaches [these works], appropriately enough as keyboard works primarily, with all that implies in terms of rhetorical reactivity to the score. Sheppard Skærved and Pienaar respond in an appreciably volatile way to the burgeoning range of affects demanded by this music, and if you seek a compact presentation such as this of these six works, it could well fit the bill.
” —David Threasher
“Peter Sheppard Skærved and Daniel-Ben Pienaar are ideally matched in presenting these works. Neither tries to outdo the other… these are intimate works pervaded by a sense of cordiality between the players – a sense of which Skærved and Pienaar are fully aware, and of which they take full advantage in these warm, congenial performances.
