Aeolus-untouch
Leading Irish composer Gráinne Mulvey writes for many combinations of traditional instruments; this work for electronics was composed for an installation by sculptor Mark Garry at the Dublin Institute of Technology, using the sounds of one of his Aeolian harps (for which the piece is named).
Christopher Fox is one of the most individual and creative composers of today with a bewildering variety of styles at his disposal – often as in his new piece ‘untouch’ using the very simplest of materials in expressive ways. This clever work is for a percussionist who instead of striking his instruments, passes his hand over them creating sine waves. The work was premiered at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2017.
Each piece was realized by its composer and receives its first recording.
Reviews
“Composers working in electronic media must up the game, which Grainne Mulvey and Christopher Fox accomplish with fluency, in¬trigue, and, above all, a winning intensity. Both Mulvey and Fox throw all matters of structure and form open to question and debate, and this is what makes the music so successful. Neither is concerned with effect or intrigue for their own sakes, and that certainty drew me into each world with interest and alacrity.

“At less than 25 minutes overall duration, this issue proves that length is no guarantee of quality – or indeed, of value for money.

“I enjoyed both electronic works. Mulvey’s attractive and satisfying exploration of this unique sound world… is music to sit back to, close one’s eyes and simply enjoy. ) I enjoyed the sheer simplicity of [Fox’s] highly meditative work: I did not want it to end.
