A new album from celebrated soloist and chamber musician Chris Gekker always creates excitement within the trumpet community. This current project, Ghost Dialogues, is unique and exciting and features both solo and chamber works. These noteworthy but accessible compositions will, no doubt, pique the interest of performers searching for new music.
The title piece, Ghost Dialogues, is the first of two compositions on the album that feature saxophonist Chris Vadala. The work is for trumpet and saxophone only, allowing intricate counterpoint, extended techniques, and wide dynamic contrasts from both musicians.
Carson Cooman’s Equinox Sonata follows and is a welcome tonal palate cleanser that features the lower-register and more lyrical sensibilities of the trumpet. Pianist Rita Sloan provides a foundation for Gekker to take advantage of Cooman’s lyrical writing in this work.
The next contribution come from composer Lance Hulme. Like Ghost Dialogues, The Street Has Changed features two soloists sans piano – this time trumpet and voice. The blend between Gekker and O’Brien is a highlight and draws attention to the clever composition.
The concluding offering on this album is of special note: Kevin McKee’s Song for a Friend was written in memory of ITG trumpeter John Wacker who was tragically lost in a car accident in Colorado in 2014. Gekker presents McKee’s homage perfectly, with exceptional phrasing and finesse, to conclude this wonderful CD.
