Found in Dreams

For Found in Dreams, Helen has once again collaborated with John Lenehan and they offer a wonderfully diverse collection of repertoire. This includes beautiful arrangements of some of their favourite pieces; a couple of short movements of outstanding clarinet repertoire by Brahms and Finzi and some delightful new compositions of their own. As well as his beautifully crafted arrangements John has also written two lovely pieces to add to Helen’s.

Throughout history, mankind has been intrigued by the idea of dreams and Helen is no exception. As she says: “It’s interesting that all happenings begin as an idea and in order to get an idea one has to be in a receptive place. When creating I find myself in a kind of timeless space, rather like a daydream. I love the freedom of dreams, anything can happen. There are no boundaries and we are free to explore with no limits. The theme of ‘dreams’ came quite naturally and many of the pieces in the album reflect this.”

Helen and John have also recorded a second album of clarinet works by Brahms and Finzi, including Brahms’ F minor sonata and Finzi’s 5 Bagatelles (extracts from which appear on Found in Dreams) as well as four of Brahms’ glorious songs arranged for clarinet and piano.

Pianist John Lenehan has performed all around the world and has more than 70 recordings to his credit, with much critical acclaim including a Gramophone award. He was praised by The New York Times for his ‘great flair and virtuosity’. One of the most versatile pianists on the concert circuit today, playing major concertos, chamber music, solo recitals and jazz, he is also an accomplished arranger and composer with two songs and several arrangements on these new albums.

Found in Winter – Music by Helen Habershon

The music has been wonderfully arranged for small orchestra (most tracks) by John Lenehan and is unashamedly tuneful, though never simplistic; impressionistic and almost visual in its impact. This album follows two previous CDs which were Album of the Month and Album of the Week respectively on Classic FM.

Helen is principally a clarinettist with a distinguished international concert, radio and TV career; after a serious injury to both wrists, she turned to composition and has never looked back, though now once again able to perform – as she does on this album.

The performers on the album have all established themselves as leading lights; John Anderson is one of the most recorded oboists in the world and professor of oboe at the Royal College of Music; Andrew Fuller left the RPO to follow a very successful career in solo and chamber performances, and John Lenehan has appeared on over 70 albums including solo recordings for Sony, receiving many plaudits. The London Primavera was formed in 1986 and consists of the foremost chamber musicians in Britain. It has appeared at many international festivals, has made two TV series, and several recordings. Anthony Halstead has made over 50 CDs all around the world with leading ensembles and is one of Britain’s most sought-after and versatile conductors

Found in Winter is Classic FM’s Drive Discovery of the Week

Tune in Classic FM’s Drive Discovery at 6.20pm every day this week (15-19 July, 2019) as John Brunning features Helen Habershon‘s new Found In Winter recording!

“Clarinettist and composer Helen Habershon’s latest offering is a selection of chamber works inspired by winter (the clue is in the title), performed by Habershon herself, with oboist John Anderson, cellist Andrew Fuller and pianist John Lenehan.

Also enlisted for this new recording is the London Primavera and Anthony Halstead.

Habershon’s work is often inspired by nature, and Found in Winter follows 2014’s Found in Sunlight and 2009’s Found in the Rain.

Premiere Recordings of Music by Jennifer Fowler and Helen Habershon

Divine Art is delighted to announce, among a record level of new recordings projects in hand, two new albums featuring music by women composers from the UK, writing in very different styles.

Jennifer Fowler is Australian, though she has lived and worked in England since 1969. Her music which spreads across many genres from orchestral to chamber, instrumental and vocal works has been performed at many prestigious festivals and has resulted in her being awarded many major competition prizes. The six premiere recordings span her composing career and are performed by Lontano, one of Britain’s most celebrated new-music ensembles, under its director Odaline de la Martinez.  The two vocal works are sung by British soprano Raphaela Papadakis and Australian mezzo Lauren Easton. The recording is being produced by Adaq Khan in London (and was recorded in December 2018 – editing currently in progress!). This album is due for release in the summer, on the Metier label.

Helen Habershon is a clarinettist but now concentrates on composition.  Her music has been featured on two previous albums and the new recording presents her wonderfully ‘visual’ expressionist music – some might call it “filmic” such is the vividness of the imagery conjured up.  A group of excellent soloists (including the composer) are supported by the Primavera Orchestra under the conductor Anthony Halstead.  The pieces on the disc were all inspired by poetry or nature and its fragility, and are wonderfully atmospheric.  The album was recorded by Michael Ponder at Potton Hall, Suffolk towards the end of 2018 and will be released in the summer on the Divine Art label.
