Choir & Organ

The music of British composer Michael Finnissy is often described as transcending conventional boundaries. The organ music is certainly rich in both intellectual depth and imagination, and ahead of Finnissy’s 80th birthday next year, the brilliant young organist Forrest Eimold has produced an impressive double CD of these complex works.

The music presented spans over six decades and charts the evolution of a composer constantly challenging himself to think beyond compositional norms. I found the most captivating performances the ones recorded in Blackburn Cathedral—three of the symphonies together with a newly composed work titled Blackburn. In that generous acoustic, Eimold weaves an intricate tapestry of sound and colour which works so well with this music, moving seamlessly from luminous to foreboding—often disturbing and intriguing in equal measure.
