Jennifer Fowler: Lines Spun
Jennifer Fowler was born in Australia in 1939; she moved to England in 1969 and has forged a very successful path as a free-lance composer since then. Over the years she has won several international prizes, and her work has been performed in Europe, Australia and Asia. Her output, which includes orchestral, chamber and instrumental works and vocal compositions, shows a composer with an individual voice within the contemporary mainstream. The works on this album are all receiving their premiere recording.
The performers are first class throughout. Soprano Raphaela Papadakis won the National Mozart Competition, had her Carnegie Hall debut in 2014 and has worked with the Royal Opera House, Berlin Staatsoper and Glyndebourne. Mezzo Lauren Easton is a busy operatic performer, her Glyndebourne debut being in 2011.
The impact of Lontano on the new-music scene has been profound and dramatic, also enduring. Formed by Odaline de la Martinez in 1976, Lontano has established itself as one of the most exciting and versatile names in the contemporary music world.

Reviews
“Fowler is late night radio, on a specialist section for people who like their music rare.. [but] this is modern music that’s not too difficult… worth a listen.
” —Jeremy Condliffe
“A nicely balanced program of three vocal works interspersed with three instrumental pieces. What better way than this for a composer to celebrate her eightieth birthday – and a lifetime of creativity! This release is a long overdue recognition of Jennifer Fowler as a major contemporary composer.
” —Gwen Bennett
“There is the most basic fact, that music is a code. Postmodern art embraces such codes in every medium, and Fowler’s music represents a sophisticated example of what can be done with the code of music. In many ways she is a conceptual artist. All the performers from the ensemble Lontano are expert, as are both singers.
” —Huntley Dent
“Lontano showcases assorted chamber music by the London-based Australian, Jennifer Fowler. Others may find a more distinctive voice than I did, but either way the performances are good.
” —Rebecca Franks
