Commissions since 1987 include Ensemble Bash, The New Music Players, COMA, Lontano, and for a trio recording by jazz trumpeter Chris Hodgkins. Rowland has also composed and arranged music for the Fidelio Trio, Jazz WarriorsOrchestra, the Gnawa musicians of Morocco, world saxophonist Ray Carless, African master percussionist Pops Mohamed, vibes player Orphy Robinson, Indian east meets west group Shiva Nova and jazz trumpeter Byron Wallen.
Rowland’s composition Enlightenment, for large ensemble and inspired by John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in early 2015. It also featured in the 2014 Meltdown Festival for two sell out concerts at the QEH. As a bandleader, Rowland also composes for his jazz bands including the Brazilian influenced Mistura, his own six piece group Rowland Sutherland Sextet, Caribbean Nu Jazz ou\it Creative Force and the London Art CollecTve with Rowland’s arrangements of music by Sun Ra, Joe Henderson, Alice Coltrane and McCoy Tyner. Performers include American jazz flautist Ali Ryerson, the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band and the Trinity College of Music Contemporary Jazz Ensemble. Coast to Coast featured in the movie The Man From Mo’ Wax. Rowland regularly performs on flute in new music ensembles, jazz groups, various non Western groups, symphony orchestras, pop ou\its and as a soloist.Rowland has taught and given workshops, masterclasses and coached at various summer schools conservatoires and universiTes including Massachuse]s Institute of Technology, Cairo Conservatoire and Flutes in Tuscany. He has tutored at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Northern College of Music, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and he currently lectures at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and tutors at the University of Southampton.
