Anthony Gilbert Recordings

Anthony Gilbert was born in London in 1934; after initial training as a translator he studied composition with Matyas Seiber, then at Trinity College under Denis Holloway and at Morley College with Alexander Goehr and Anthony Milner as well as studying at Tanglewood.

 

He worked as Editor of Contemporary Music at Schott music publishers until 1970, took the post of Granada Arts Fellow at Lancaster University and then moved to the RNCM,  first as tutor then as Head of Composition, until his retirement in 1999. His students include many of the foremost composers of recent years including Sally Beamish, Simon Holt and Paul Newland among many.   Anthony’s memoirs were published in 2021 (“Kettle of Fish”) and he held several important positions in the New Music world.

Anthony died on 5 July 2023 aged 88.
