Rowland Sutherland

Flute

Rowland Sutherland is a flautist with a vibrant international career, performing across a wide array of musical genres including contemporary classical, jazz, and non-Western styles. His solo flute performances have been featured on BBC Radio 3, and he has collaborated with symphony orchestras, pop groups, and non-Western ensembles. As a composer and arranger, Rowland has written for various groups and the BBC, with notable commissions for ensembles such as Ensemble Bash and New Music Players. His piece *Timeless Odyssey* was included in the *Crying Bird, Echoing Star* album released by London Independent Records.

In 2005, Rowland’s *Espiritu Libre* premiered at the South Bank Centre as part of the London Festival of Latin Music, performed by the contemporary classical group Lontano. His piano trio *One for Hermeto* was debuted by the Fidelio Trio at The Warehouse in London. Rowland studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under flautists Kathryn Lukas, Philippa Davies, and Peter Lloyd. He also studied jazz with the late Lionel Grigson.

Rowland is a sought-after educator, teaching at prestigious institutions such as Trinity College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Royal Northern College of Music. He also conducts workshops and coaching sessions at universities and community centers across the UK.

As a performer, Rowland leads the Brazilian jazz fusion band Mistura, which has played at major jazz festivals like Glastonbury, the City of London Festival, and Bath International Festival. Mistura’s album *Coast to Coast* was released on the FMR label. Beyond his work with Mistura, Rowland has performed with many prominent new music ensembles, including Icebreaker and Lontano, and has appeared as a soloist at the BBC Proms. His notable appearances include performing with Icebreaker at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center Festival.

Rowland is also active in jazz collaborations, performing with the likes of David Murray and African master drummer Gaspar Lawal. He has played with notable Brazilian artists including Nana Vasconcelos and Dom Um Romao, and has recorded with diverse artists such as George Benson, Incognito, and William Orbit. His involvement in experimental and free improvisation projects continues to broaden his musical scope.
