John Lill

John Lill has enjoyed a distinguished international concert career spanning five decades. His musical journey began at the age of nine with his first piano recital, and by eighteen, he showcased his talent by performing Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto under the baton of Sir Adrian Boult. His London debut at the Royal Festival Hall featured Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto, garnering much acclaim.
Over the years, John has garnered numerous international prizes and awards, including a victory at the 1970 Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition, solidifying his bustling global concert schedule.
With a career spanning more than fifty countries, John has graced stages as both a recitalist and soloist with top orchestras worldwide. From European capitals like Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, and Vienna to Russia, the Far East, Australasia, and the United States, he has collaborated with renowned orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and Boston Symphony.
John Lill’s extensive repertoire includes over 70 concertos, with a notable emphasis on Beethoven, whose complete piano sonatas he has performed in the UK, USA, and Japan. In the UK, he has been featured in over 30 BBC Promenade concerts and has toured internationally with major orchestras.
Recognizing his significant contributions to music, John was awarded the CBE in the 2005 New Year’s Honours List.
