After graduating in music from the University of York in 1984, Isabelle Carré studied flute with Pierre-Yves Artaud in Paris. Working as a flute player mostly in contemporary music, she regularly collaborates with composers and has given many first performances, both as a soloist and a member of groups such as Ensemble Exposé and Critical Band. She has appeared at major contemporary music festivals and recorded for radio and television throughout Europe. Premières include works by Michael Finnissy, Jonathan Harvey, Brian Ferneyhough, Symon Clarke, James Wood, Paul Archbold, Roger Redgate, Mary Bellamy, Paul Whitty and Martyn Harry. She plays early flutes from the Renaissance to the 19th century, as well as those from several other traditions including Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Indonesian. As a founder member of Southbank Gamelan Players, London, she has premiered new commissions from composers such as Salvatore Sciarrino, Plaid/Supanggah, and Rolf Hind. She also leads workshops on historical musical instruments and on Javanese gamelan at the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, in the Faculty of Music, University of Oxford.
