Attempts to describe this unique and compelling music are going to do it less than justice. It has to be heard. One might say it has to be ‘seen’, as it has an intriguing visual quality. Basil Athanasiadis is developing a body of work that is very special, lasting and repeatedly rewarding. Its aesthetic is Japanese; think Haiku, Wabi-Sabi, Kintsugi, think of precious, gentle, deeply beautiful attention to detail.

In this disc Athanasiadis presents works that “either directly or indirectly bear some relation to dreams, sleeping or in general, the state of subconsciousness.” Everything, musically, is meticulously arranged and crafted, and unfolds as naturally as the petals of a flower. The instrumentation is an exquisite marriage of Western and Eastern, varied and stimulating, floating in and out like images in a dream.

The musicians who make up Shonorities deserve the highest praise for their poise, precision and beauty of execution. The informative booklet accompanying the CD states that ” By blending a variety of musical cultures, Shonorities aims to show the potential of the cross-cultural collaboration in the contemporary music creation.” Here they succeed completely. This is not a hotchpotch of ‘cross-cultural’ soundbites thrown together to appeal to the ‘world music’ market. It has focus, sincerity and depth. It is guided by a clear and considered purpose which is not contrived or self-serving.

I must mention the voice of Shie Shoji which features on this disc and on other works of Basil Athanasiadis. It is perfect in this context and I cannot imagine it being bettered or equalled.

There is an old saying, often attributed to eastern thought ‘If you want peace in the world, strive to achieve peace in your own life.” Music like this will help. It is a wonderful follow up to ‘Soft Light’ and is highly recommended. Congratulations, blessings and thanks to all concerned.
