Brilliant Japanese pianist Mariko Terashi has loved the music of the baroque since a very early age.

This new album presents her beautifully warm yet virtuosic playing on a modern piano of classics by three composers central to the development of baroque keyboard music: the French masters Couperin and Rameau, and the Portuguese Carlos de Seixas. A superlative concert program. This album was released to great success in Japan only (Nami Records) in 2016, and now has its global release (so this version is not for sale in Japan).

Mariko Terashi studied in France and has lived in the UK since 1995 where she enjoys an active concert career as both soloist and chamber musician. She is particularly interested in piano adaptations of harpsichord music of the 17th and 18th centuries and has been described as ‘offering fresh insights into the music’ and displaying ‘tremendous emotional depth’.

Reviews

Fanfare

A recital that is thoroughly engaging. [Terashi’s] touch seems entirely appropriate for the music, neither too percussive nor too delicate, neither too detaché nor too legato. The sound of the recording is spacious and clear, with well-defined piano tone. The sound of the recording is spacious and clear, with well-defined piano tone. Overall, this release offers the listener much pleasure.

The Chronicle

The year is only a couple of weeks old and already we’ve got what must surely be one of our albums of the year, a beautiful collection of piano pieces. Terashi’s playing is sensitive, imposing her own interpretation of the music without ever losing the original sound.

Terashi’s account proves there is real emotional weight here … the A major [Sonata by de Seixas] is meltingly lovely. Much to enjoy. (Four stars)

I thoroughly enjoyed the music presented on this CD. For me, the sheer vibrancy of all these numbers, whether joyful or sad, is a revelation. Mariko Terashi impresses throughout and the recording of this wonderful music is splendid, revealing with great clarity all the harmonic, contrapuntal and decorative detail.

Rafael Music Notes

Terashi’s playing is elegant, sober, and poetic… Altogether this is a lovely collection of French Baroque gems, beautifully annotated, nicely engineered, and flawlessly played by Mariko Terashi.
