This is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Östlund’s music is highly beautiful, and he is lucky to have such a skilled group of performers. This is music of filigree beauty [which] traces a journey through the seasons.

Anyone already familiar with Östlund’s earlier Divine Art releases will know what to expect from this sixth chapter and be wholly satisfied. The listener coming to the composer’s material for the first time, on the other hand, will be well-pleased by its wealth of compositional material and variety of performances, not to mention enticed by the mystical worlds the music conjures.

Jonathan Östlund is a composer who reveals an ability to create works that are magical, playful and energetic but always with a distinctive sound, a sound that will surely appeal to a wide audience.The recordings, made at Greystoke Studio, London are close but clear and detailed. The booklet and art work are up to Divine Art’s usual high standards.

Östlund’s signature, like Debussy and Schumann in the great tradition, merges atmosphere, mystery, fantasy, and fairy tale. . The sensation of Nachtmusik is so strong that one can approach these two discs as a single narrative of encounters by moonlight. [Östlund’s] personal vocabulary—striking, often repetitive rhythms, dashes of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, diatonic harmonies that bend in other directions, and remembrances of vocal traditions from Arabia and the Orient that decorate the lyrical line with melismatic flourishes—is markedly original. [I] feel enriched by stepping into his world of fancy free.

Listeners unfamiliar with Östlund may be pleasantly surprised at the accessibility of his works and the consistent quality with which he produces them. And all the performances, by a very large number of soloists and ensembles, are engaging and effective. Inviting and pleasant to listen to, staying firmly in a tonal universe.

Exploring Voyages, we discover personal journeys, both geographical as well as introspective, with unique events and treasured memories. The music is very accessible and tonal, often full of wit and humour, and always atmospheric.
