Eduard Tubin was—and remains to this day—one of Estonia’s most significant composers. Among other works, he left behind a rich body of choral music—mostly for male chorus, as he himself conducted Estonian male choirs for many years, most notably the Estonian National Male Choir.

With this new production, the choir itself now presents an eloquent testament to Tubin’s oeuvre. 

In addition to shorter choral pieces, the two compositions honoring fallen soldiers—Song of Warriors Retreating and Requiem to Fallen Soldiers—are particularly impressive.

The Requiem, in particular, speaks volumes not only about Tubin’s artistry but also about the interpretive strength of the Estonian National Male Choir. Already at the top of their game vocally and harmonically, the ensemble knows how to illuminate this composition in all its dimensions. In doing so, the solemn and the honoring always take precedence over the heroic, and subtlety and sensitivity always prevail over superficial reverence.

Here, the story of a soldier—one of many—who leaves behind a grieving mother is told. Even without a translation or at least a summary, we are immersed in a wide range of emotional worlds; the interpretation alone allows us to share in the fateful events—not only in this intense, moving requiem, but also in the other compositions. Each is a short story told with pinpoint precision. A minimal textual aid might have further intensified the listening experience.
