Here is a remarkable congruence of composers. In 1892, Edvard Grieg left and unfinished piano quintet, a 250-bar torso comprising a sonata exposition. Now the experimentally-minded, intellectually wide-ranging Michael Finnissy has completed it as a 27-minute “one-movement Kammersymphonie” in authentic style. It is a creative transfiguration of academic prowess and critical insight to recall Anthony Payne’s realization of Elgar’s Third Symphony and Finnissy’s own recent resolution of Mozart’s unfinished Requiem. Written (and here recorded) alongside it is Finnissy’s own 35-minute Grieg Quintettsatz, developing the same material in far freer fashion, though still embracing tonality, if sometimes parodistically.
