Finally, an album of Poulenc on two pianos, played by Antony Gray and Rob Hao. This has provided me with immoderate amounts of pleasure, combining familiar pieces such as L’embarquement pour Cythère, the Élégie and the Sonata for two pianos along with a rarity: Poulenc’s film score for Le voyage en Amérique, which the composer himself recorded with Jacques Février but which was largely unpublished. It was the last film to star Poulenc’s friend Yvonne Printemps, and ‘Adieu maison’, a song he wrote specially for her, is also included here, sung by Helen Miles. Alise Silina adds atmospheric accordion-playing to the Valse for accordion. In addition to the original two-piano pieces, the album includes Poulenc’s two-piano arrangement of the Concert champêtre. The digital version of the album offers a substantial bonus including the Sonata for four hands and the Capriccio for two pianos. The performances are wonderfully idiomatic from start to finish and the recorded sound is excellent. Warmly recommended
