The music of Newcastle upon Tyne appears once again from the Avison Ensemble playing the music of their namesake. The 18 th -century composer’s works, influenced by his friend Geminiani, is very worth reviving, and here we have the 12 Concerti Grossi opus 9 and the 6 of opus 10 in two CDs from Divine Art. The 11 strings and harpsichord, directed by Pavlo Beznosiuk from the lead violin, were recorded in the Jubilee Theatre of St. Nicholas Hospital, Newcastle, and it is the third set of Avison’s music to be released on this label. He is certainly a composer not to be ignored.
