Tchaikovsky’s orchestral music, not unlike Rachmaninov’s, lends itself wonderfully to piano transcriptions and paraphrases—magnificently colourful and contoured, immaculately graded and given to long-breathed gestures, which push ever forward in intensity to reach climaxes of enormous power and grandeur.
