Rawsthorne and Other Rarities

Alan Rawsthorne was one of the central figures of British 20th century music; here we have three rare works, an early and little known String Quartet, the premiere recording of his Chamber Cantata, and his complex and difficult ‘Practical Cats’. Vyacheslav Artyomov - The Way to Olympus

New Music for a New Oboe, Vol. 2

The first ‘New Oboe’ disc, msv28529, issued mid 2013, featured two epic new works by Michael Finnissy and Edwin Roxburgh, while the second, msv 28531, will include new pieces specially commissioned, by Sam Hayden, Edward Cowie, Paul Archbold, Dorothy Ker and Christopher Fox. These albums also feature two brand new instruments: the Howarth-Redgate oboe and the Lupophon, so should be of interest to all oboists.

Russian pianist Natalia Andreeva has studied the unique sound world of Ustvolskaya, famed and reclusive pupil of Shostakovich, for many years. Her disc of the complete solo piano music (DDA 25130)  was highly praised. She is joined by acclaimed violinist Evgeny Sorkin in Ustvolskaya’s two major works for violin and piano – the Sonata and the Duet, both substantial almost symphonic works.  To be recorded in September for release in spring of 2019.
