My introduction to the music of French composer Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was a 1990 choral album of Poulenc’s music by Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Festival singers on the Telarc label. I remember at the time thinking how unique, dissonant, yet accessible Poulenc’s sound was, and how utterly revolutionary. I haven’t been listening to much Poulenc lately, but that has now changed with the release of this superb new album of Poulenc’s Music for Two Pianos (complete except for the Concerto for Two Pianos), performed by pianists Antony Gray and Rob Hao (joined briefly by soprano Helen Miles and accordionist Alise Silina) on the Divine Art label. If you like Poulenc’s music, this is an absolute must.
