Poor old Grandi usually receives no more than a walk-on part, as in Paul McCreesh’s Venetian Vespers reconstruction on DG Archiv*, which contains two of his motets, neither of them duplicated here, where everything by Grandi is billed as a premiere recording. The performances here are clean-cut and shapely, but, as Johan van Veen noted in his review of the CD, a trifle lacking in colour – especially when heard after that McCreesh recording. Nevertheless, with good recording, especially as heard in the lossless download, and with the booklet containing texts and translations, albeit in a colour and on a background which make them hard to read, this will do well enough unless and until a better comes along.
